So you’re thinking of getting a dog. Congratulations! You’ll soon join the 6 million other Canadians who know the joy of a tail wag, the warmth of a canine kiss, and the pleasure of loyal companionship.
With so many types of dogs available from so many different sources, where do you even start?
You start here! At FindingFido.ca, Canada’s definitive guide to making a smart, humane choice about getting a dog.
A dog can be a wonderful addition to your life, providing companionship, fun and affection for many years. For your sake and the sake of your new furry friend, you need to make a smart, informed choice on what kind of dog and where to find your new Fido.
We’ll help you figure out if you’re ready for a dog, how to choose one that’s healthy and right for you, and how to make sure you don’t get ripped off by a shady breeder or, worse, unknowingly buy a dog from the cruel puppy mill industry.
Who are we and how do we know all this stuff?
We are the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS), and we’ve been working to protect and promote the welfare of all animals in this country since 1957. We are Canada’s national voice of humane societies and SPCAs (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
We know more about dog-breeding, dog-buying, and shelter dog adoption than anyone else in the country, and we’ll serve it to you straight up. We’ll help you with all the crucial details that can make or break your experience of getting a dog. We’ll guide you step by step to make a truly informed decision, and make sure your new best friend is a match for life.
We’re a registered charity that receives no funding whatsoever from any level of government, so we rely on people like you who care deeply about animals to help us achieve our vision of humane treatment for all animals in Canada.

FindingFido.ca is completely different from other websites about getting a dog. Our goal is to educate, not advertise. We’re not trying to sell you a dog or help anyone else sell you a dog, or even persuade you that one breed is better than another, or that purebreds are better than mixed.
The goal of this campaign is simple: to connect finders with keepers.
